Evidence dossierThe evidence dossier — both sides, by the receipts

Dune's Fremen are built from Arabic and Islamic sources, yet the 2021 film cast no Middle Eastern or North African actor in a Fremen role, and whether that is erasure or faithful diverse casting remains a values dispute 1

The critical side argues omitting MENA actors from Fremen roles erases the books' Arabic and Islamic inspiration 1. The defending side argues the cast is still diverse and Herbert's Fremen are not a one-to-one ethnic allegory 1. WhatSphere rates faithfulness 79 of 100 and advocacy 24 of 100, mixed 2. Whether literary cultural inspiration requires on-screen ethnic casting is a values question 1.
